Hot-End Simulator
The Hot-End Simulator (HES) is a facility that sits behind a combustor, mimicing the behaviour of a turbine section in a gas turbine. This component reduces the pressure and temperature of the exhaust gasses by removing heat rather than work from the exit gases. Intermediate sampling points between the sub-stages can take gas samples for subsequent analysis.
The HES has been used to study the formation of particulate matter (PM) and aerosol precursors as part of an EU funded, multi-industry project (PARTEMIS, 2000 - 2002).
