GTRC Undertakes Resarch into the ignition of High-Flashpoint Fuels

Cardiff University Gas Turbine Research Centre researcher Dr Anthony Giles is working with the Health and Safety Executive on a Joint Industry Project (JIP) to better understand the ignitability of uncontrolled high flash point fuel releases. The project entitled “Further Investigation of Mist Explosion Hazard (Mists 2)”, builds on our previous work “Experimental Investigation of Oil Mist Explosion Hazards (Mists1)”. The latter resulting in two research reports being published on the HSE website (RR1109 and RR1110).

Work package 1 involves spray ignition trials, spray visualisation and spray characterisation using Phase Dopler Anemometry (PDA).

Work Package 2 will concentrate on examining the effect of orifice geometry and roughness parameters on the resultant release rate and primary breakup.

Varying geometry orifices have been manufactured in stainless steel using additive manufacture (AM) technology at Cardiff University School of Engineering (https://lnkd.in/deYvcNb).
