New Optical Staged Combustor commissioned

A new Optical Staged Combustor has been commissioned Cardiff University Gas Turbine Research Centre which allows for the testing and refinement of a broad range of combustion strategies for current and future alternative fuels e.g. pre-mixed, diffusion, fuel staging, RQL, high swirl, low swirl and micro-mix.  This new combustor integrates into the High Pressure Optical Casing at the GTRC facility, and provides improved optical access for advanced diagnostic techniques.  The modular nature allows different combustor architecture to be explored at elevated temperature and pressure conditions.

In addition to the development of the new combustor, a traversable optical platform has been added, which allows for 2D spatially resolved data to be obtained when using optical techniques.

This combustor has already been deployed during our EPSRC funded Laser Induced Grating Spectroscopy (LIGS) project and Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) project investigating RQL strategies for ammonia and hydrogen blends.
